Hollywood Methodist



     The console at Hollywood Methodist has led an interesting existence. It was originally constructed, along with the church’s original organ by the Casavant firm of Quebec Canada in 1930.

The core members of our firm began working on this instrument in 1971, making this our oldest and longest standing client. As additions were being made to the organ, it exceeded the capabilities of the organ’s original console. It was decided at that point to renovate the console.

The console’s original side jambs and coupler rail were replaced with new woodwork, and electric actions, and keeping the original shell and pneumatic coupling action. Enough new drawknobs were added for the anticipated additions.

    
    

After the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the church decided to renovate the interior of the church. Many positive changes occurred, including the removal of the acoustic ceiling tiles, and removal of most of the carpet from the building. Included in the renovation was the complete remolding of the chancel area of the church.

This included reconfiguration of the choir seating, and a new wooden floor. During the initial discussions about the renovation, it was realized that the console would need to be completely electrified, as the room underneath the console where the console’s reservoir, combination action and wiring would be removed during the renovation. It was also a desire of the church to have the organ console movable for musical performances, such as organ concerts.

To fulfill this desire, it was necessary to completely renovate the organ’s console. As part of the vision of the instrument as not only an organ to be used for worship, it was the church’s vision for an instrument to be as versatile and complete to be used for musical performance from solo organ concerts, to a choral accompanying instrument, to an organ that can perform with a full symphony orchestra.
During the renovation all of the original wind operated mechanisms were removed. A fifth manual was added (the keyboard, an original Casavant keyboard from the same time period, was located in a barn in Ontario Canada, and was procured for this project). 

All of the interior woodwork was replaced with new woodwork out of Honduras Mahogany and Makassar Ebony. Some new exterior parts and moldings were made from American White Oak.
The internal chassis and frame were rebuilt and modified using American White Birch, and tubular and channel steel. All of the original manual and pedal contacts were replaced utilizing Hall effect sensors for the manuals and reed switches for the pedals (the original contact mechanisms were retained for the key spring action so as to retain the original key action feel).

The expression and crescendo shoe mechanism was replaced with new mechanisms constructed at the Williamson-Warne & Associates’ shop utilizing tubular potentiometers.
The console contains all new drawknobs, coupler tabs, and manual pistons. The toe pistons were retained from the first renovation, and supplemented during this renovation.

A unique feature is the music rack ledge, which contains expression and crescendo position information, and certain control features for the organ. The original design of the music rack lip was created by Williamson-Warne & Associates in conjunction with Classic Organ Works of Toronto Canada, and was the first one produced.

The organ’s solid-state control system was also designed and manufactured by Classic Organ Works. The organ contains a 250 memory-level combination action with sequencer. The organ also contains a 64 channel, programmable M.I.D.I. (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) system, with a built-in display screen showing which sound is assigned to which channel.

The organ also contains a small video screen with a 3-position switch connected to a camera system within the church to allow the organist a clear view of different locations within the church.
